Dull Skin

Dull skin is a common concern and usually reflects how well the skin is functioning rather than a specific skin condition. Skin can appear dull when it lacks brightness, looks tired or uneven, or no longer reflects light evenly. This often happens when the skin barrier is impaired, hydration levels are low, or dead skin cells build up on the surface, preventing light from reflecting properly.

One of the main contributors to dull skin is reduced skin cell turnover. Healthy skin constantly renews itself, shedding old cells and replacing them with new ones. When this process slows down due to factors such as dehydration, stress, ageing, environmental exposure, or unsuitable skincare, dead cells accumulate on the surface, giving the skin a flat or lifeless appearance. Hydration also plays a key role in skin brightness. When the skin is well hydrated and the barrier is functioning properly, the surface appears smoother and more reflective. When hydration is low, the skin can look rough, uneven, and tired, even in the absence of dryness or flaking. At Dr Mélanin, we approach dull skin by identifying the underlying cause rather than treating it as an aesthetic concern alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach out to us if you cannot find an answer to your question.

In skin of colour, dullness can make the skin may look grey, ashy, uneven, or shadowed. This is often linked to dehydration, barrier disruption, or subtle inflammation that is not always obvious on visual examination. Because inflammation and irritation are less visible in darker skin tones, dull skin can sometimes be overlooked even though the skin is under stress.

Skincare forms the foundation of treating dull skin. Gentle cleansing, regular moisturising, and products that support hydration and barrier repair help restore skin smoothness and clarity. Where appropriate, carefully selected active ingredients may be introduced to support healthy skin renewal without causing irritation or inflammation.

In some cases, in-clinic treatments may be used alongside skincare to improve overall skin quality, hydration, and radiance such as Profhilo or polynucleotides with hyaluronic acid. These treatments are chosen based on your skin type, sensitivity, and goals, and are always used to complement (not replace!) good daily skincare.
