Softening lines, keeping your expression

Understanding your skin

Fine lines and wrinkles in skin of colour

Fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of ageing, but that does not mean they cannot be treated. With advances in aesthetic medicine, it is now possible to soften lines, restore skin quality, and maintain natural facial expression without surgery.

At Dr Mélanin, we provide dermatologist-led treatments for fine lines and wrinkles in Grays, with specialist expertise in treating melanin-rich skin safely and effectively.

The science

How lines form

Ageing is a structural process that affects every layer of the face. From the late twenties onward, collagen and elastin production gradually declines. These proteins are responsible for keeping skin firm, smooth, and elastic.

As they reduce, the skin becomes thinner and less resilient, allowing lines to form more easily. Over time, repeated facial movement leaves its mark where the skin no longer has the support to spring back.

Fine lines
Shallow creases that typically appear first around the eyes and mouth.
Wrinkles
Deeper, more established folds that develop as skin structure changes over time.
FIRM & SUPPORTED Collagen-rich LINES FORM Collagen declines
Collagen and elastin act like a supportive mesh beneath the surface. As that mesh thins, the skin loses its spring and creases begin to set in.

Two kinds of line

Dynamic and static wrinkles

Lines form due to repeated facial movement, collagen loss, sun exposure, and gradual thinning of the skin. Knowing which kind you have helps guide the right treatment.

When you move

Dynamic wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles appear when we move our facial muscles, such as frowning or smiling. Forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet are common examples. Over time, these expression lines can become permanently etched into the skin if collagen support weakens.

Often softened by relaxing the muscles behind them, with anti-wrinkle treatment.

When your face is at rest

Static wrinkles

Static wrinkles remain visible even when the face is at rest. They reflect deeper changes in skin structure, including volume loss as well as skin thinning, particularly around the mouth and lower face.

Often improved by restoring structural support, with dermal filler and collagen stimulation.

Both types can be improved with the right combination of treatments.

Your natural protection

Melanin: your skin's umbrella

Melanin literally sits around your DNA like an umbrella, and stops it from getting damaged by UV radiation from the sun.

Your DNA is your body's instruction manual for making your skin properly. If it gets damaged, your skin no longer knows how to make itself properly, and you can develop fine lines, wrinkles and even skin cancers.

That's why sun protection is so important, whatever your skin tone.

More common in darker skin

Eumelanin

Darker skin makes more eumelanin, a brown-black pigment that gives natural sun protection, helping to shield DNA from UV damage.

A big reason darker skin tones tend to show visible signs of ageing later than fairer skin.

More common in lighter skin

Pheomelanin

Lighter skin makes more pheomelanin, a red-yellow pigment that offers little to no protection and doesn't shield DNA from damage.

Later doesn't mean never: melanin-rich skin still benefits from daily SPF.

Why our approach is different

Melanin-rich skin often shows signs of ageing differently.

While darker skin tones may develop wrinkles later due to higher baseline collagen levels, they are more prone to pigmentation concerns such as uneven tone and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Aggressive procedures can increase pigmentation risk if not performed correctly.

At Dr Mélanin, we use evidence-based protocols tailored specifically to skin of colour, so treatments are carefully selected to protect your skin as well as refresh it.

Beneath the surface

What causes fine lines and wrinkles?

Some changes are part of natural ageing; others are shaped by the world around us and the way we live.

i.

Within the skin

  • Declining collagen and elastin, from the late twenties onward
  • Thinner, less resilient skin, which creases more easily
  • Volume loss, which deepens folds around the mouth
  • Repeated facial expressions, which etch in dynamic lines
ii.

Lifestyle & environment

  • Sun exposure, as UV radiation breaks down collagen fibres
  • Smoking
  • Stress
  • Poor sleep
  • Dehydration

Sun exposure is one of the biggest contributors to premature ageing, particularly on the forehead, around the eyes, and across the cheeks.

Your treatment

Softening lines, naturally

There is no single solution for ageing skin. A personalised treatment plan is essential, and often combines medical-grade skincare, injectable treatments and collagen stimulation.

i.

The foundation, always

Medical-grade skincare

A strong skincare foundation supports and prolongs in-clinic treatments. Consistency with skincare often determines long-term success.

Prescription retinoidsIncrease collagen production and improve cell turnover.
AntioxidantsProtect against environmental damage.
Daily SPF 50Prevents further collagen breakdown and UV-induced ageing.
iii.

For skin quality and early ageing

Collagen stimulation

Microneedling stimulates the body's natural collagen production by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin. Over time, this strengthens the dermis, improves skin texture, and softens fine lines. Radiofrequency microneedling enhances this by delivering heat energy into deeper layers, promoting tighter, firmer skin.

When administered conservatively by a medically trained doctor, treatment softens lines while keeping you looking like yourself.

Signature Programmes

Programmes for fine lines and wrinkles

Where lines are part of a wider picture, one of our structured programmes brings your treatments together into a single, considered plan, matched to your stage of life.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

01At what age should I start treatment?

There is no "correct" age. Some patients choose preventative treatment in their late twenties or early thirties, while others seek correction later. Assessment is individual.

02Will anti-wrinkle injections freeze my face?

When performed conservatively by a medically trained doctor, treatment softens lines while maintaining natural movement and expression.

03Are wrinkle treatments safe for darker skin tones?

Yes. Injectable treatments do not affect pigmentation. However, energy-based and resurfacing treatments must be selected carefully to minimise pigmentation risk.

04Can skincare alone remove wrinkles?

Skincare can significantly improve fine lines and prevent further ageing, but deeper wrinkles often require in-clinic treatments for optimal results.
